I think he is messing with to make him quit or to document a pattern of insubordination to enable them cut him with out having to pay him for conduct detrimental to the team. I think it's a well thought out shrewd plan.
Interesting, at first you argued that the problem was Haynesworth since he is poison;

However, next you applauded Shanahan for;

So, either it is Shanahan's fault for "messing" with Haynesworth or Haynesworth's fault for being a "poison." In the alternative, perhaps you are arguing a little of both; Haynesworth is poison and Shanahan is messing with him. If this is the case, then Shanahan is still outsmarting himself since he is the cause of the breach and thus Washington will have to pay both financially and on the field; Washington was aware of what they were getting in Haynesworth and accepted him by signing him, but then Shanahan came in and, for whatever reason (perhaps, believing Haynesworth is poison) did not like Haynesworth, so he started messing with him.

As a result, Haynesworth, clearly is not happy and will likely not bleed for the Redskins which is bad for the team on the field and since Shanahan started messing with Haynesworth in an attempt to get rid of him, then the Redskins would be liable for his cost since Shanahan, as a servant to the principal, the Redskins, was the actual cause of the breach.

Either way, with the Raiders signing Alford, it seems very unlikely that they would make a move for Haynesworth.

When Gruden was asked if he would coach the Raiders again he was quoted as saying, ”Tomorrow if I could”.
