Yet again, Josh McDaniels and the Denver Broncos have made headlines. This time, both good and bad. But what does this year’s news have to do with how good the season will be.
The bad started on April 14th, when, as expected the Broncos traded pro-bowl receiver Brandon Marshall to Miami for a 2nd round draft pick in the 2010 draft and a 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft. Five days later, tight end Tony Scheffler, who was drafted by the Broncos in 2006 along with Marshall and Jay Cutler, who the Broncos had traded last year, made his escape to Detroit when he was traded in a three-way trade that also involved the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles acquired linebacker Ernie Sims, the Broncos got the Eagles fifth round draft pick in this years draft, and the Lions got the Broncos 7th round pick in 2010 in addition to Scheffler.
Of course, Part of the good started on March 14th when the Broncos traded Peyton Hillis, a 6th round draft pick in the 2011 draft, and a conditional draft pick in the 2012 draft to Cleveland for former first-round pick Brady Quinn, adding a fourth quarterback to the roster. At that time, the Broncos had Kyle Orton, Chris Simms, and 2nd year quarterback, Tom Brandstater. Shortly after Quinn was acquired, Denver cut Chris Simms. However, they would again add a fourth quarterback to the roster when they drafted Florida quarterback Tim Tebow 25th overall, even though he was regarded as a fourth rounder by most.
In addition to all the moves on the offensive side of the ball, the Broncos have also worked to improve the defense. The have added several defensive veterans in addition to drafting several talented defensive players that could really help.
So does all this mean that the Broncos will have a good 2010 campaign? Well, let’s look at it this way. There is always a possibility that Kyle Orton, or Brady Quinn whoever gets to start this season, has the best season of his career, Phillip Rivers gets hurt and the Chargers struggle all season long, the Raiders get JaMarcus Russell back, the Chiefs stay where they are, and every single guy on the Broncos roster plays the best football they have ever played. With that said, the chances of the Broncos winning their first playoff game since Jake Plummer started for them are slim. The chances that they make it to the playoffs, slightly less slim. I think they start out good, again, and then by the end of the season will not be in control of their own fate, again. I’m predicting another 8-8 or maybe even a 9-7 season but just coming up short of the playoffs. Think last years Texans.
