| Candid Cam: Bears break bank for Cutler Disgruntled quarterback Jay Cutler is heading from Denver to a place where many a quarterback has failed to succeed: The Chicago Bears. Cutler becomes the gazillionth quarterback the Bears have pegged to complement one of the NFL's traditionally top-tier defenses. Jim McMahon is the only Bears quarterback to reach the Pro Bowl in the past 46 seasons. But enough about the Bears. Enough about Cutler (see Thursday's column for more on him). Let's understand how Thursday's blockbuster deal reverberates with the 49ers and Raiders. * * * 49ers watch from sidelines * * * The 49ers don't have Cutler as their savior for one of three possible reasons. 1.) They didn't think he was worth the outrageously high price Chicago paid for him (first-round draft picks in 2009 and 2010, a 2009 third-round pick and a backup quarterback, that being Kyle Orton). The 49ers have higher picks in those rounds than the Bears, so they obviously could have made a sweeter package if they so desired. Smart move not to sell the farm, not when general manager Scot McCloughan insists the 49ers primarily build through the draft, even if that credo hasn't been followed in recent high-priced offseasons. 2.) The 49ers didn't like Cutler. Sure, he made the Pro Bowl last season, buoyed by his impressive passing stats for a Denver team that had no running game whatsoever last season. But maybe the 49ers were turned off by Cutler's apparent immaturity, poor leadership and his reputation for being a sore loser. (Or maybe they love him and the Broncos refused to send him there because they still hold a grudge for that Super Bowl pasting in New Orleans 20 years ago.) 3.) The 49ers believe they have their quarterback in Shaun Hill. Or Alex Smith. Or Damon Huard. Or in next month's draft, if they angle for Georgia's Matthew Stafford (the possible No. 1 overall pick of the Detroit Lions) or USC's Matt Sanchez (who reportedly had a sensational pro-day workout Wednesday) or a darkhorse candidate in the third round who'll become the next Joe Montana. Then again, why waste all this time talking about 49ers quarterbacks when we all know that their offensive catalyst is running back Frank Gore. And more Gore. And more Gore. * * * Raiders watch AFC West rival ditch QB * * * No matter how the Broncos spin this, they just lost a franchise quarterback coming off a Pro Bowl season. That's a blow to any franchise, especially one that is rebuilding behind a new coach and new general manager. Advantage, Raiders. New Raiders defensive coordinator John Marshall will have to keep an eye on who the Broncos replace Cutler with at quarterback. If it's Chris Sims, Kyle Orton or Door No. 3, the Raiders better put on some gamefilm and start analyzing the options while the Broncos brass does the same. The Broncos surely enhanced their rebuilding effort with this colossol package of high draft picks. But, again, the Broncos will have a new quarterback that must immediately step forward as a leader. Same goes for the Bears and their new quarterback. LINK >> Candid Cam: Bears break bank for Cutler - Inside Bay Area

Yeah........I don't expect much out of McKiddiecoach....I think it's just a matter of time before he steps on his crank once too often.....The only thing he's done right,to this point,is blow up that pathectic excuse of a defense.... The FA RB signings he made were highly questionable and the Cutler mess is inexcusable....There was no valid reason whatever to tamper with an offense that ranked #2 last year, period, let alone running off the franchise QB.... To date, not one of Beliceks assts have moved on to any measure of success, and I have no expectations or illusions that this little kid will be the first.... |

The comparison between Coach Kiffin and McDaniels seem to be dead-on... in the end, Kiffin proved to be too young for the task and McDaniels seems to walking in his shadow... To be honest, I feel for you guys... to lose a player like Cutler who is so young and so good would be heartbreaking. However, the real cry-baby in the AFC West, to me, still is P. Rivers... In regards to J. Russell, his protection has not been solid and the coaching carousel cannot be good for him either. However, the man does have the tools necessary to win... let's see how he does with some protection and some continuity before anyone labels him "Jabust". Cutler walked into a better situation in Denver than Russell did in Oakland... but, that was then.
