Lions coach Jim Schwartz was asked a simple question Thursday: Does the team need a win?
Schwartz responded by saying every NFL team needs a win, especially 0-2 teams like the Lions. When he was asked whether a win would let the Lions finally move forward -- considering their 0-16 record last season and current 0-19 streak -- Schwartz said no because his team disregards the past.
"Honestly, that's something that maybe you guys could stop talking about, maybe the fans would stop talking about," Schwartz said of the losing streak. "But from my standpoint, our message to the team is we don't talk about that. We don't talk about what happened last year, what happened the week before."
Schwartz did talk about what happened three years ago and how, sometimes, one win can be especially valuable.
In 2006, Schwartz was Tennessee's defensive coordinator. The Titans started 0-5 and were riding an 0-8 streak dating to 2005. The next week, the Titans won, 25-22, at Washington, and everything changed.
"Then we had the bye week," Schwartz said. "It was like we'd won two weeks in a row, because that positive vibe kept going, and we were able to turn it around and ended up finishing 8-8 that year.
"It's the same thing here. You have zero in the wins column, you need to get out from under that. It changes a lot of attitudes and makes the day a little bit easier to get through."
