Packers keep building up defense, take DT Raji
GREEN BAY, Wis.—The Green Bay Packers filled a critical need on their rebuilding defense in the first round of the NFL draft, taking Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji with the No. 9 overall pick on Saturday.
After the Packers' defense bore the brunt of the blame for a disappointing 6-10 season in 2008, Green Bay brought in a new defensive coordinator, Dom Capers, and is in the process of switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defensive alignment.
By taking Raji, Packers general manager Ted Thompson passed on the chance to draft Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree—a player many analysts considered one of the most talented in the draft.
