Default Texans target Cody

Texans target Cody

DANA POINT, Calif. — The Texans ended their search for a free-agent defensive lineman Monday when they agreed to a three-year deal with Shaun Cody, a former second-round pick by Detroit.

Cody, 26, is expected to sign today. He’ll compete for playing time with starters Amobi Okoye and Travis Johnson and backups DelJuan Robinson and Frank Okam.

Cody, 6-4, 310, joins defensive end Antonio Smith (Arizona) and quarterback Dan Orlovsky (Detroit) as free agents signed by the Texans.

Cody, who played at USC, was drafted in the second round in 2005. He started only 11 games in four seasons with the Lions. Four of those starts were last season when Detroit became the first 0-16 team in NFL history. He had 36 tackles, including 25 unassisted. Cody hasn’t recorded a sack since his rookie season .

By signing Smith and Cody, the Texans can take care of another need position on defense rather than select an end or tackle with their first-round pick, 15th overall.
