Default Colts waive Dawson, down to 4 running backs

Colts waive Dawson, down to 4 running backs

The Indianapolis Colts have waived running back Clifton Dawson. He appeared in two games in 2008 before being placed on the season-ending injured reserve list with what the team described as a head injury.

Dawson's departure leaves the Colts with four running backs: Joseph Addai, Mike Hart, Lance Ball and Chad Simpson. They might re-sign veteran backup Dominic Rhodes, who became an unrestricted free agent after last season.

Colts gain draft pick

The Colts were awarded one compensatory pick in the April draft, a fourth-rounder. The pick is the 36th of the round and the 136th overall, and gives the team eight overall selections.

The league issues compensatory picks using a formula that takes into account significant veteran free agents lost and signed the previous year, including the players' salary, playing time and postseason honors. Under the formula, the Colts signed no significant free agents while losing starting guard Jake Scott, who signed a four-year, $20 million contract with the Tennessee Titans.
Steelers open season vs. Titans

The Super Bowl champion Steelers will open the 2009 NFL season in Pittsburgh on Thursday, Sept. 10, against the Tennessee Titans.

The league said the Bears will play at Green Bay in the first Sunday night game. Both the Titans-Steelers and Bears-Packers games will be on NBC.
Etc.

Free agent WR David Patten has rejoined the Browns after playing two seasons with the Saints. . . . The Dolphins traded C Samson Satele to the Raiders for an undisclosed draft pick, clearing the way for Jake Grove, a former Raider signed earlier this month, to move into the starting center spot. . . . DirecTV extended its deal with the league for Sunday afternoon games through 2014, an agreement worth $4 billion to the league.
