Jaguars select offensive tackle Eugene Monroe with No. 8 overall pick

The Jaguars didn’t expect it to happen, but Virginia offensive tackle Eugene Monroe fell right in the club’s lap on Saturday with the No. 8 pick of the NFL Draft.

The youngest of 16 children, Monroe (6 feet 5, 316 pounds) becomes just the second offensive tackle taken in the first round by the Jaguars since Tony Boselli in 1995.

Monroe provides immediate help, and his acquisition could mean that right tackle Tony Pashos might be moving inside to guard. There appear to be concerns about Monroe's knee. Knee issues affected Monroe's play during the 2006-07 seasons.

The Jaguars selected Monroe over wide receiver Michael Crabtree and defensive lineman B.J. Raji, both of whom were highly-rated players who also would have filled a Jaguars need.
