The BCS is Total BS.
How do you know when something isn’t very popular? When someone who benefits from it is against it. The Texas Longhorns are going to be playing for the BCS National Championship on Thursday, but Longhorns QB, Colt McCoy, doesn’t even like the system.
Colt McCoy, who hopes to lead his team to a National Championship, has recently said that he would like a playoff system. Can’t say that I blame him. Not only would it even the playing field for non-BCS teams like Boise State and TCU, it would also help to boost interest in college football.
For one, it would probably give us something to watch while waiting for the championship game. That boosts interest. I mean come on. Who wants to wait a few weeks for the first bowl game and a couple more for the championship?
It would also give sports fans the chance to watch an amazing upset. A playoff system would put the top 8 teams in the country regardless of conference, which would give the Boise States and TCUs of the world to possibly compete against the Alabama’s and Florida’s of the world.
Think about Super Bowl XLIII. The Pittsburgh Steelers, though heavily favored, did not attract all 98.7 million viewers, and neither did the underdog Arizona Cardinals. Super Bowl XLIII was the most watched Super Bowl in history. The chance of a huge upset attracted much of the attention. The Steelers had won 5 Super Bowls prior to 2009 and the Cardinals had never even been to one. That fact alone made the game interested.
I don’t know about anyone reading this, but I would love to see Boise State, who trounced TCU in the Fiesta Bowl last night, go against Texas for the National Championship. That would be interesting. More interesting than Texas against Alabama. So what, two undefeated BCS Conference teams are going to play for the championship. It is so cliché. I want to see an underdog fight through adversity and have the chance to shut the big schools like Florida, Alabama, and Texas up.
Every other sport in the country has a playoff system. So what the hell is wrong with college football? Even President Barack Obama wants to abolish the BCS. Obviously something needs to be done.
