NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees threw six touchdowns to tie a team record as the Saints opened the season with a 45-27 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
Two of the tosses went to Jeremy Shockey in a two-and-a-half minute spell in the second quarter to give New Orleans a 28-10 lead.
Brees, who passed for 358 yards, also connected with Marques Colston, Robert Meachem, Devery Henderson and Heath Evans for touchdowns to equal Billy Kilmer's 1969 team record. The pass to Henderson covered 58 yards.
Detroit lost for the 18th consecutive time in regular-season play. The Lions, who went 0-16 in 2008, have not won since 2007.
Top draft pick Matthew Stafford started at quarterback for the Lions. He passed for 205 yards and scored on a one-yard run but was intercepted three times.
