At some point, the Tom Cable/Randy Hanson story will recede into the background, at which time Chaz Schilens will likely still be a in a cast, recovering from a broken foot. Schilens said he broke the fifth metatarsal in his left foot early in Tuesday’s joint practice against the San Francisco 49ers, injured while simply running a pass route and receiving no contact. He made his way to the fieldhouse afterward, jumping on his right foot. “They told me my fifth metatarsal broke, so that’s it,” Schilens said. Since camp opened, probably no Raiders player has put as many good practices together as Schilens. He had become a go-to target for JaMarcus Russell, catching five passes for 52 yards in a little more than a qurater of the opening preseason game and drawing a 47-yard interference penalty. Schilens made his way from the field house toward the hotel on crutches, his left boot in a foot, stopping for a moment to talk with reporters. “It’s just a sharp pain,” Schilens said. “Couldn’t run any more so I knew something was wrong. It is what it is.” Schilens didn’t know how long he would be out, but it means the Raiders will be hoping Javon Walker’s progress with the training staff while on the PUP list is no mirage. Walker is scheduled to return to practice Monday following the 49ers game. In other news, coach Tom Cable declined to answer questions about the Randy Hanson incident, although when asked directly if “nothing happened,” as was reported on ESPN, Cable repeated, “nothing happened.” More to come later . . .
