Raiders Patriots trade DL Richard Seymour to Raiders

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Five-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Richard Seymour has been traded from the New England Patriots to the Oakland Raiders, giving the rebuilding franchise a veteran stalwart up front.

Seymour is in the final year of a contract paying him $3.7 million this season. In return, the Patriots received a first-round draft choice in 2011.

"From nearly the day he arrived in 2001, Richard Seymour established himself as one of our premier players for nearly a decade," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Sunday. "His presence has been felt as a force on the field, a respected man off it and a multiyear champion."

The 29-year-old Seymour was drafted by the Patriots sixth overall in 2001, and started 105 of 111 games over eight seasons. He made 460 tackles and 39 sacks, and in 2002 was selected to the first of five consecutive Pro Bowls.

His trade to the Raiders was first reported by ESPN.

"Any transaction we make is with the goal of what is best for our team and, as difficult as it is to part ways with a player of Richard's stature, many factors were taken into account when we considered this trade," Belichick said.

"As an organization, we feel the trade with Oakland brings sufficient value and is in the long-term interest of the club," he added. "We are extremely grateful for the huge impact Richard's elite level of performance had on our success and we wish him the very best during the rest of his career."

Out fucking standing!!!
The bad news keeps rolling in!!! The bad management continues to ruin this team!!!
We are giving up a first round pick, which will be a top 10 pick for sure, for a player who is gonna play with us for one year and leave!!! Wow!!!

... not to mention that he will be 30... this has me scratching my head. I am thinking that this trade has to be conditional, maybe that is why it is for a 2011 pick - to see if he resigns with the Raiders

When Gruden was asked if he would coach the Raiders again he was quoted as saying, ”Tomorrow if I could”.

Well nobody seems to like anybody we take in the first round as it is. At least Seymour can play at a position where we need help the most. Even if it is only a year. We can always franchise him next year.

I hope that's the case teneb, cause this will be a shitty deal otherwise, I know people are thinking I'm never happy! But why would I be happy if he plays one year leaves the raiders, and on draft day in 2011, I'm watching the patriots draft a player in the top 10 that we could have gotten???
And to make matters worse, what if seymour resigns with the pats next year???
We basically rented him for one season for a first round pick??? Garbage!!!
He was defensive end in the 3-4, so what is he gonna play for us????

At 310, he'll obviously be a DT. You can't play DE in the 4-3 at that weight.

This dude played in 15 games, had 52 tackles and 8 sacks last year.

He's the kind of guy who will adjust quickly and play hard as hell in his contract year.

Here's the deal. This guy will do nothing but help RIGHT NOW.

Is he worth the pick? Maybe, maybe not. But he's a disciplined, highly productive baller at a position of desperate need.

Cya, Todd Watkins.

I will take a productive DT that can get to the QB and stop the run anyday. Richard Seymour is a studd! We need somebody that can help stop the run and we just got him!!! To hell with a 2011 first round pick. The AFC West is there for the taking now!!!

personally woulda rather had wilfork. better run stuffer, younger. but ill take seymour! this is awesome news. and at worst we have him for 2 years. this year and franchise him (that is if we dont franchise howard or morrison who i believe are two big linebackers we should deff try and retain)... but seymour will help shore up the run game.

on top of talent. does anyone see what we are doing? we brought in greg ellis. we brought in seymour. we are bringing in vets that know how to win. to reteach the young guys wut it takes. get the bad mentality out. these 2 guys know what it takes to win. they can help teach. mayb seymour wont teach like ellis, but he will lead by example. showing them true dedication and desire... showing them what it takes to be the best. this is a great move imo!
