Raiders Seymour makes punishing debut

Recently acquired defensive lineman Richard Seymour made good on his promise to be the one on top of the quarterback Monday night against the San Diego Chargers.

Seymour recorded two sacks in his first game with the Raiders barely 48 hours after he reported to the team in a trade with the New England Patriots.

Seymour's versatility was visible from the outset. He began the game at right defensive end, then moved inside to right tackle on a third-down play. His ability to play both positions gives defensive coordinator John Marshall the latitude to be creative with his alignments and personnel packages.

Defensive tackle Tommy Kelly came out when Seymour moved inside. On that play, Seymour pressured Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers on a pass that missed the mark.

Seymour's ability to wreak havoc from various points along the line illustrates why the Raiders felt comfortable giving up a 2011 first-round draft pick to get him in the fold.

Sure enough, Seymour dropped Rivers for a 5-yard sack on the Chargers sixth offensive play. He followed that with a stop of running back LaDainian Tomlinson on the next play. He added a sack late in the second quarter as the Chargers attempted a last-second drive.

There was a question as to how much Seymour would be able to play, given his late arrival and lack of any practice time with his new team. It didn't seem to matter one bit. He played the majority of the time and made his presence felt repeatedly.

# Tomlinson salivates at the thought of playing against the Raiders. And why not? In 16 career games, he has amassed 1,906 yards and 19 touchdowns rushing.

However, he had a night to forget Monday. He failed to get untracked, managing only 55 yards on 13 carries and fumbled for the first time since Oct. 27, 2006. He did tack on a 1-yard touchdown late in the second quarter.

# Raiders left guard Robert Gallery sustained an injury midway through the second quarter. He received treatment on the sideline but was unable to return. Chris Morris replaced Gallery, with Samson Satele taking over for Morris at center. Gallery returned in the third quarter.

# RB Justin Fargas (hamstring), wide receivers Chaz Schilens (foot), Javon Walker (knee), and Nick Miller (shin), offensive tackle Khalif Barnes (ankle), guard Paul McQuistan, tight end Brandon Myers and quarterback Charlie Frye were deactivated by the Raiders for the game.
