Warren Sapp has kept up a running commentary concerning the Raiders which his former teammates either ignore or laugh off as it simply a case of Sapp being Sapp. During this week’s episode of Showtime’s “Inside the NFL,” when panel members James Brown, Cris Collinsworth and Phil Simms were discussing the Raiders and any confidence gained from a 24-20 loss to the San Diego Chargers, Sapp had an interesting take. “Oakland plays worse when they have confidence,” Sapp said. “Oakland plays worse when they feel good about themselves.” Having been through some embarrasing face plants following infrequent victories, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha didn’t disagree. “Absolutely,” Asomugha said. “Sometimes you go out and play a great game, whether you win or lose, and then the next week it’s like, `What happened?,’ because you’re still resting on that win or that effort.” Asomugha didn’t see overly concerned about Sapp’s on-air assertion that the Raiders season is already over, along with the seasons of Detroit, Kansas City, Cleveland and St. Louis. Asomugha asked if Sapp said that before or after the San Diego game. When told it was after, he expressed little more than mild surprise. “Oh, you know, it’s his opinion. The guys here, it’s not like we would hear that and, ‘well, ya know, Sapp’s right,’ That’s the guy’s opinion and that’s what we have to deal with. You put that out of your mind and focus on the task at hand. It’s not a big deal at all. And if you didn’t tell me I wouldn’t have even known. That’s pretty much how it is. Guys don’t listen to that stuff.” It’s not as if Asomugha and teammates who played with Sapp have heard his bombast before. “That’s the way he is,” Asomugha said. “He’s going to be outspoken and he’s going to speak his mind. Doesn’t mean that everything he says is right.” More to come following practice and briefing with coach Tom Cable and scheduled interview with defensive coordinator John Marshall . . . Note: Punt returner Johnnie Lee Higgins was not with the team at the beginning of practice with a shoulder sprain, increasing the likelihood he won’t play against Kansas City.
