Default Tom Cable hints that Raiders pursued Donovan McNabb

Tom Cable hints that Raiders pursued Donovan McNabb

Posted by Mike Florio on April 17, 2010 1:18 PM ET

Three weeks ago, the Raiders were one of the teams linked directly to former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. Adam Schefter of ESPN called them on multiple occasions the favorites to land McNabb.

Unlike past reports, the Raiders didn't respond by calling Schefter a "false rumor monger." In fact, the Raiders didn't respond at all. They also didn't trade for McNabb, possibly because McNabb scared them off with a threat to retire. (McNabb later denied that.)

Now that the dust has settled and the story has faded into the space between sofa cushions now occupied by Santonio Holmes, Ben Roethlisberger, and the upcoming draft, Raiders coach Tom Cable has addressed the situation. And while the headline in the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat states that the Raiders weren't in the running for McNabb, Cable's quote paints a slightly different picture.

"Some of that, there's not a lot of truth to it," Cable said, implying that there is some truth to it. "And who was really involved in that, I don't know that we were really the player everybody said that we were. . . . We've got who we've got on contract right now, and whether or not that changes between now and the draft, or we go in and draft a guy or trade for someone after -- whatever that is, we'll see. But I don't know that the draft, the depth of it, concerned us about Donovan, because it really wasn't our play to make."

Later that day, the Raiders announced the acquisition of Kyle Boller, and word emerged that Bruce Gradkowski suffered a torn pectoral muscle. Cable acknowledged neither situation, further proof that the shreds of truth can be found only when reading between the lines of the things an NFL head coach says.

Reading Cable's comments between the lines, it sure sounds like they were in the running for McNabb. At that makes us think that, if Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen is available at No. 8, the Raiders very well might take him.
Hopefully, the Raiders will draft Clausen. For the record, I am not stating that Clausen will definitely be the next Peyton Manning or better - though if that is the case and the Raiders end up drafting him, then that would be great - rather, I am arguing that there is no one else that would be worth drafting (and that would be available) AND he fills a serious need for the team. Thus, the Raiders would be wise to draft Clausen.

When Gruden was asked if he would coach the Raiders again he was quoted as saying, ”Tomorrow if I could”.
