The Oakland Raiders continued their non-pad practice weekend with a practice Sunday morning. These weren't the "learning intensive" practices that prevailed last year, but they were far from full go contact practices.
Mike Mitchell made the mistake of the morning when he "forgot" to cover tight end Zach Miller on a crossing route. The offense wants to see more of Miller wide open this season, but the Raider defense needs to get their coverage of tight ends down as they will have to cover Antonio Gates twice and Dallas Clark once.
In going against Miller in practice every day, they are getting repetitions against one of the the top tight ends in the league. This should have them better prepared when the whistle blows against other teams. However, defending tight ends has been a weakness of late.
In a two minute drill, Jason Campbell was able to lead the team into range for a Sebastian Janikowski field goal. Neither Kyle Boller nor Bruce Gradkowksi could match or surpass that feat.
The urgency that offensive coordinator Hue Jackson preaches should manifest itself through the season during two minute drills. When rallying a team to move down the field for a late score, urgency is paramount. The quarterback has to impart the maximum information in a minimum of time. They also have to keep everything uptempo because the clock is their enemy at that point and any lallygagging wastes precious seconds.
Wide Receivers Chaz Schilens (foot) and Louis Murphy (concussion) missed their second straight day of practice.
