Raiders New offensive coordinator Hue Jackson brings new mindset to Oakland Raiders

NAPA -- Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson's voice is the one heard most often on the practice field. On Thursday, he spoke with the media for the first time since being hired in the offseason.

He said he likes what he has seen throughout offseason workouts, the first four weeks of training camp and Oakland's two exhibition games.

"We're trying to build a bully here," Jackson said. "Every player that wears that helmet understands what we're trying to build here each and every day, and it's about competing. It's about going out there every day and being the best at what you do, and our guys are taking that challenge."

Jackson inherited an offense that finished 31st (out of 32 teams) in average yards and points per game last season, with quarterback Jason Campbell and right offensive tackle Langston Walker the only notable changes from last season.

There isn't any reason the Raiders offense can't be one of the more dynamic units in the league if Jackson's assessment of the players at his disposal holds true.

"Obviously, we have a wealth of good players here," Jackson said.

The key will be generating more production from players such as running backs Darren McFadden and Michael Bush and wide receivers Chaz Schilens, Louis Murphy and Darrius Heyward-Bey, among others.

"Our guys have really embraced my attitude and the things that I'm looking for because the bottom line is, we want to win," Jackson said. "And we expect to win here. That's the difference. There is an expectation here. The Raiders are supposed to win. And that is our expectation and that's what we are going to do."

Jackson spent the past two seasons as the Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach. He was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins in 2003 and the Atlanta Falcons in 2007. He served in a similar capacity with Cal and USC earlier in his coaching career.

Jackson will take over play-calling duties from coach Tom Cable.

Cable pinned a lot of the offensive ineptitude last season on the play of quarterback JaMarcus Russell, whom Cable benched after nine games. Jackson said there were a multitude of things that hindered the offense last season.

Just the same, he said, much of the Raiders' success this season will hinge upon the play of Campbell.

"Our offense is driven by the quarterback, there's no question," Jackson said. "Obviously there are 10 other guys who have to play at a high level, too. But our quarterback is a guy who needs to play well. It's proven; when a quarterback plays well, you have a chance to have a pretty good offense."

Jackson said he wants to be known for more than his stand-out personality.

"Everybody talks about my style," Jackson said. "I'm kind of an in-your face guy. I coach with a lot of energy. The most important thing is, I'm looking "... to get our players, whether it's offense against defense or defense against offense, to compete at a high level."

Raiders

Hue Jackson is a great addition to this team. I see fire in the Raiders that I have not seen in a long time.
