Default Disappointments and Suprises

Disappointments:
- Jason Campbell: He had no fire; no passion. I saw him (twice) run only to slide before getting a first down. Moreover, he could have had first downs both times, if he was not unwilling to take any contact. When a quarterback fights for extra yardage to get a first down, it often ignites a team. That is perhaps why the team seems to respond so well to Bruce Gradkowski. He may not be the biggest guy in the room, but he will give the team everything he has and would go to war to get a first down.

Surprises:
- Darren McFadden: Though surprise is not the right word, since I (like many other fans) have not given up on McFadden - I really liked his never-say-die spirit today; he never gave up, regardless of the scoreboard. The play calling, again, did not seem geared to his strengths, but he fought on regardless. He needs to be given the ball more and there needs to be more tosses and screens called for him.

Extras:
- The offense did not play well at all - Jason Campbell never really had a chance to build up any rhythm (but, he could have done better for even when he had protection, he seemed to hold on to the ball too long).

When Gruden was asked if he would coach the Raiders again he was quoted as saying, ”Tomorrow if I could”.

Surprised that Campbell is worse than I thought, surprised that Bush didn't play. It was apparent we needed a big back. #20 had a nice game, but the bulk of the contribution came while the game was way the hell out of reach.. Disappointed that our defense look as bad as it did...Also that the coaches have no balls to put Grad in.

defense looked reallllly good besides that first drive. shutting chris johnson down for the entire first half minus that last run... but you cant say the defense looked bad. they had no breaks since the offense was 3 n out over and over and over again... just my opinion...

I think it has to do with our QB being black?

did u even see the game or just talking? the offense bottled up the best running back in the game over and over again until the end of the first half. then the 2nd half i truly think they were gassed...

I agree with that assessment; and would add that Campbell had an opportunity to ignite the team. That first slide was exceptionally bad; it was on third down and the first down was well within his reach - he could have had that first down, give the Oakland defense a much needed rest, and perhaps change the course of the game, if he had wanted it bad enough. Can you imagine Gannon or Gradkowski not getting that needed first down when it was within reach, just to avoid any and all contact? Instead, Campbell slid safely to avoid any possible contact, the beleaguered defense came on the field yet again and CJ broke that one long run.

This speaks volumes about Campbell and explains why the team seems to respond so well to Gradkowski. Gradkowski seemingly goes to war for every play; he may not be the biggest quarterback, not the strongest quarterback, and perhaps not even the best quarterback, but he will fight on every play; he will bleed just to get a first down and the team cannot help but respond to a player like that. Unfortunately, Gradkowski also seems somewhat injury prone.

Back to yesterday's game, to be fair, the play calling was atrocious. When Campbell was totally out of synch with his receivers and the line was getting pounded - they all needed some confidence - they should have called more short plays earlier. Moreover, with Tennessee being so aggressive on defense, a couple screen plays would have likely yielded great results while giving Tennessee reason to slow down. Also, with McFadden playing with such heart and pride, a couple of tosses to him on the outside would have helped.
