Defensive adjustments by Phillips, staff help spark comeback
Never discount a good D.C. especially when it comes to making the proper adjustments and with the exception of a G.M. being priority #1 D.C. is what this team really needs cause we have to many good players on D to be playing the way we are especially on 3rd down.
CINCINNATI – In the first half of the Texans’ 20-19 victory over Cincinnati, the defense allowed 204 yards, including 91 rushing. The Bengals led 16-3.
“They ran some plays we hadn’t seen,” outside linebacker Connor Barwin said. “They ran some plays we hadn’t practiced against. But we made adjustments and shut them down in the second half.”
Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and his defensive assistants made halftime adjustments, and the Bengals were limited to three points and 81 yards, including 9 rushing, in the second half.
“I can’t imagine having a better defensive coordinator than Wade,” inside linebacker Brian Cushing said. “I’m so grateful for the job he’s done this season. And I’m so proud of our defense.
That wasn’t who we are in the first half. We allowed them to move the ball and make big plays, but in the second half, Wade made adjustments, and we executed.”
Last season, the Texans finished 30th in defense, including 32nd against the pass. They’ve been first or second in defense during the seven-game winning streak. Phillips was the only choice to replace Frank Bush, who was fired after two seasons.
“He’s done a great job,” Cushing said.
In the Texans’ dressing room, Phillips was wearing a tie and an AFC South Division champions cap.
“I’m very happy for Houston and the fans,” Phillips said. “Houston’s my home. It’s where I started. To be able to win and clinch the division for Houston makes it that much more special.”
