Default Early, comments from the Locker-room

Quote:
... Veteran defensive end Richard Seymour agreed that Jackson didn’t lose the support of his players.

Al Davis gave Hue Jackson a shot to lead the Raiders. Jackson finished 8-8, a victory away from the AFC West title.

“No, not at all,” Seymour said Tuesday from his offseason home in Georgia. “I didn’t hear any rumblings about that. I heard news reports make more of a deal about it than it actually was. I feel like Hue did a good job and made great strides as a coach.”

Wideout T.J. Houshmandzadeh, a midseason signee who Jackson knew from his time as a Cincinnati Bengals assistant, concurred with Seymour, saying in a telephone interview, “I don’t think he lost the locker room, and I’d be eager to find a guy who didn’t think he did a good job. I would be hard-pressed to find a guy who didn’t like Hue. I’ll bet you San Diego, Kansas City and Denver like this move, because we would have been good next year with Hue.” ... “I’m tired of people saying that I’m power hungry, that I’m a blowhard, that I’m saying all the wrong things. I never said I wanted to be the general manager. I said I wanted input. What coach wouldn’t want some input in the direction of the organization?

“When I said I wanted to play a greater role, what I meant by that was, I’m going to get a defensive coordinator that I want. I’m going to get the staff members that I want. And the players that weren’t playing well aren’t gonna be here. ... “He [D. McFadden] was probably the offensive MVP of the league at that point,” Seymour said. “You lose him and your quarterback, it’s tough. But I thought Hue did well.

“He was very meticulous in his thought process. In terms of getting the team ready to play, every day he challenged the team to go out and be better than the day before. Even in practice, as a team, I just thought we gave it all we had, every day since training camp.

“I never felt like we had a letdown. He always got his team ready to perform. Obviously, it didn’t show as much on Sundays as we would’ve liked, given our record. But I thought we had the right process.” ... “I just know we were prepared,” Houshmandzadeh said. “I thought he did a hell of a job calling plays and putting guys in position to make plays. It’s crazy. I’m shocked. I thought the team had a chance to be really, really good next year.

“The proof is in the pudding. I thought offensively, we played well. Carson came in midway through the season. It’s tough. Think about this: We’re up by two scores with six minutes left against Detroit. We win, we’re in the playoffs. Carson threw for 400 yards against San Diego. … But we didn’t make enough plays.”

Jackson believes he improved the Raiders’ organizational environment, insisting, “I think there was more direction, leadership and unity in the building.” Seymour agreed, saying, “I can only speak for the time that I’ve been there. Every year, we made strides in the right direction. I think we did that this year, though our record didn’t improve.”

Obviously, Mark Davis did not share that opinion. And though the owner and McKenzie insisted in a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the general manager had made the call to dismiss the coach, Jackson believes otherwise.

Interesting comments from those in the locker-room - also, in an audio interview, Jacoby Ford seemed shocked by the news.

Ultimately, at this point, I honestly feel that this was a mistake. I cannot help but wonder how this team would have looked with a better defense. Seems like a shame just to get his guys in.

Yeah i agree 100%.They should have just let the offseason come and some time go by then came back for minicamp refreshed.I bet our division rivals love this move.
it really is a classic fail.
Doesnt Mckenzie remind you of art shell.

No fucking way! Hue had to go. You don't go 7-4 and finish the season 8 and 8. Yeah he we had injuires, but how many games did the raiders blow it the 4th qtr this year or get flat our killed?

Raiders

I meant his monotone voice.
He seems like he has a vision though.Just takes him a long time to relay it based on yesterdays conference.

O yeah let's say "his guy's" come in (winston moss) and maybe darren perry as d-coordinator.
Wich seems fine on the first look at it.

BUT......

Don't the packers have a bottom ranking defense?
To think they have all those pro bowlers and bottom in stats and overall defense.Imagine what we would look like with who we have on defense in there scheme. Not good.

So, the defense blows, but you want to fire the guy that has helped ignite the offense - even through injuries to key players - and very likely had no say in who his DC would be. This does not make sense.

790 is a passionate guy prone to focusing on the negatives. Hard to blame him after what we've all had to live through beginning with that disgusting SB loss to TB.

I am with you though. IMO we have cut off our nose to spite our face. Just when I thought we were going to enjoy some positive continuity and take it to the next level.

I suppose if Reggie goes and gets Cowher, Fisher or maybe Gruden I could live with this. But I can tell you Winston Moss will certainly not thrill me. I want no part of any coach associated with that GB defense this season. Epic fail.

It seems you guys forget. We could never get a legit coach in here. No one wanted to coach the Raiders. Cable fell out of favor with the old man. Cable and Marshall started blitzing and pissed the old guy off and they were out. And we had the 11th overall defense in the league. Hue started sucking Al's dick right away and go the job by default. The mistakes he made weren't "rookie mistakes" they fundamental flaws.

Not kicking the FG in the Browns game making it go down to the wire. The utter incompetence in the KC game. not kicking the FG in early in the smae game. Running a slow Michael Bush out of the wildcat while having a healthy at the time Taiwan Jones. Chicago same thing not kicking the FG and putting them away making an uncomfortable game when it didn't need to be.

Than benching DHB and Kevin Boss for the Denver game. Which more than likely would have given DHB a 1000 yd season.

Again utter incompetence against Miami. Green Bay trying for a fake inside your own 30 midway in 2nd qtr. That is showing that you have already given up hope.

Detroit game again 1ST QUARTER not taking the FG and than not going for the 2 point conversion after the Curry TD on 3rd and 3 knowing the Lions are making a comeback and you haven't been able to stop Calvin Johnson all day you go for a 30 yard bomb. When you've been running for 5 yards a clip against them.

The next KC game again trying a fake FG pushing Jano out of range.

San diego not getting your team ready to kick a FG before the half. and also electing to put lito Shephard on a 6-5 reciever when you have a 6'2" db in DVD.

Oh and to top it off the most penalized team in the history of the league in yards and calls.

You guys are probably right though. He did a lot to deserve another shot!

Yeah, W. Moss does not inspire confidence. So far, Gruden seems like the only coach that could make this bad move look better.

You are nitpicking; generally Coach Jackson was a good coach. Does this mean all of his decisions were correct or that he never made a mistake? No. With a solid defense, the Raiders could have seemingly made some noise next year. However, now, who can say what direction the Raiders will go.

The Raiders, under Coach Jackson, were 7th (even with the injuries) in rushing offense and 11th (even with a new qb in the middle of the season and other injuries to receivers) in passing yards. Contrast these stats to the Raiders stats before Jackson came - as I recall they were far closer to the bottom 10 than the top 10.

Whichever coach comes in, if he cannot help the Raiders improve upon these numbers, than this knee-jerk move would likely be proven to have been a very bad move.
