Titans Titans reserves win final warm-up against Packers

In their final tune-up for the regular season, the Titans' starters hardly got warmed up.

Their time in the spotlight will be here soon enough — six days to be exact.

Even before the backups polished off a 27-13 victory over the Packers in the preseason finale Thursday night at LP Field, the Titans (3-2) were already focusing on the regular-season opener at Pittsburgh on Thursday.

"It's not only kickoff weekend, it's the kickoff to kickoff weekend,'' nickelback Vincent Fuller said. "We're excited. We're going in to play the defending Super Bowl champs, and they know we're gunning for them.''

Quarterback Kerry Collins got in just six plays against the Packers — three more than the Titans' starting defense played — before giving Vince Young and other reserves a chance to close the preseason with a flourish.

They did just that. Young guided two long scoring drives in the first half, throwing especially well and mixing in some nice runs.

He was 7-of-12 passing for 85 yards and a touchdown — an 8-yard toss to rookie receiver Dominique Edison. He also ran five times for 38 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown bolt.

Young had his ups and downs during the preseason but ended it on a high note.

"I just wanted to show coaches I am growing and paying attention,'' Young said. "I just want to get better each week.''

On Saturday, the roster shrinks from 75 to 53. On Sunday, the practice week for the regular-season opener begins.

"We have some work to do,'' Coach Jeff Fisher said. "We have a couple of tough days with decisions as we work the roster down. But overall after five preseason games and everything we accomplished, I think we'll be ready for the opener.''
